Re: [apple-iphone] I killed my iPhone
I had this problem with the two previous updates on a Vista computer. (I had hoped that it wouldn't have happened with windows 7!!) Both updates appeared to progress to the end but when the phone tried to reboot it was totally black and unresponsive. In both cases I had to trek to the Apple store and have them restore the phone, update it and then come home and use my backup to restore all my data. There is some problem with PC's and itunes. When syncing I often get freezes and unresponsive cancellations. A helpful member suggested another computer (the at&t store tried to update my phone on their PC and had the same problem). Another member suggested turning off firewall and spyware etc. Turning off active spyware scanning helped with syncing but not always.
I have been reluctant to do the current update because of my previous experience and the fact that here in upstate NY in winter the weather isn't always conducive to traveling to the apple store!! I probably with do it in couple of weeks or wait for 4.0.
So I recommend a trip to the apple store, a restore and update there and then restoring your backup. Unfortunately anythng you put in after that Jan. backup will be lost (unless the backup done in the process of updating your phone was saved before everything went haywire for you)

I hadn't backed up my 3Gs iPhone since the first of the year and saw
there was a new OS update. I connected the iPhone to my Win 7 laptop and
got a USB device malfunction error. I changed USB ports and the backup
went fine. I then tried to update the OS. Half way through I got another
USB device error and the phone went into recovery mode -- which I assume
means the OS is wiped out. I tried to do a restore but keep getting a
restore error. I changed cables to another aftermarket one I had at home
with the same error. I am going to try using the OEM cable (it was at
work) to see if that is the issue and have my fingers crossed.
Any other ideas?
