The very same problem I have.
Been looking for some free apps or at least not ridiculously overpriced but to no avail.
I prefer something that would just let you drag-and-drop or simply sync as I do not have those mobileme and other cloud accounts.
Anyway, if your files are in Word or txt format, Just email it to yourself as an attachment and read it from there. It's not convenient though but that's what I sometimes do.
I have another phone which runs on Windows Mobile and it is very easy to sync Office documents there. But problem is it's not as easy to read documents on that PDA phone since its interface is not the same as iPhone where you just drag or flick the screen. Windows Mobile uses the old-fashioned scrollbars and sometimes needs stylus to do it better.
