One bar is related to your 3G signal. I am sure whoever set up your network gave
you a paper with the user name and password or the network key.

go to your iphone's setting and look for the "network." In that list choose your
network's name. If it is not password protected you can use it for surfing,
email or downloading content from the internet. If it is password protected than
you need to enter the password. Look at the paper that professional gave you.

Connecting to the home network isn't going to do anything for the
*cellphone* bars, is it? though it will be useful for data - email,
internet, etc. -- I use mine all the time that way for iTouch/Phone/Pad.
