AIRPLANE MODE shuts off the wireless antenna.. not just the phone calling feature....

Put it in airplane mode.

Then just find a place with free wifi and use skype.

Go to skype.com and learn about pricing, etc. It's cheap.

If you sync to iPhoto or similar you can see the info in the details, look
at "Places" - photos others have taken and sent me from all around the world
show up all over a map. On the iPhone the Camera App asks every time if you
want to allow location services or not - you can also disable in settings.
On other phones you generally have to go ot the settings to turn it off or
on.

The Latitude and Longitude are embedded in the ExiF (Exchangeable image file
format) data within the image. Many image viewers can show that data for
you. I use IrfanView, and it will even connect you to Google Earth and show
the location.

I did a little digging for that online recently, and the only options
I was able to find were a $5/month add-on service from AT&T or
variants on assigning a silent custom ringtone.
