I've done nothing to the phone, I've not treated it any different etc.  The only thing I've done is update apps and I admit to being from a window's background where if you add something and something else stops working properly, its due to the new thing one has added.  Maybe Apple doesn't work that way... all I know is that I didn't have this problem before I updated things this weekend.

Any suggestions on helping me fix the problem I'm presented with? Since you're not experiencing any of the problems I am, that might rule out Facebook as the culprit.

What is it that makes you think it's an App?
Nothing in your post points to an App.

I have the latest update to FaceBook and don't have the problem you describe.
